As her first Toronto performance since the world got to know her a little more via Drake’s More Life, Jorja Smith wasn’t just comfortable onstage at The Opera House, she owned it. Presented by Live Nation, the UK songstress brought along fellow London talent Ama Lou to warm up the crowd waiving through songs from her debut EP DDD while evoking a power that wasn’t overbearing, but rather minimal and calm.
The mellow vibes carried through to Jorja’s performance, as her boisterous vocals filled the room and nestled itself through the small unoccupied spaces in the crowd. Jorja, who performed covered of the Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” as well as TLC’s “No Scrubs” was playful in nature, but also unafraid to get emotional as well.
After speaking about a friend passing away, Jorja performed. “Goodbyes” from her forthcoming Lost & Found album (June 8th), as well as songs like. “Blue Lights,” “February 3rd” and “Teenage Fantasy.” Beyond being warm and inviting, Jorja was also humbled, restarting “Imperfect Circle” while acknowledging a mistake, and of course, vibing out with the crowd as she closed the show with Preditah’s remix of “On My Mind.”
If her stage performance is this strong at the beginning of her career, Jorja Smith will be around for a very long time.
