Much like his Wu-Tang brother Raekwon who founded Ice H20 in Toronto and signed JD Era, the New York rap vet has also taken to Canadian talent. Having already released an album with Toronto band BadBadNotGood (and wearing their merch in this interview), Ghostface Killah is looking to expand his discovery into his newest Supreme Records signee. In an intimate meet and greet this past Tuesday, Ghostface and co-creator Farley Flex spoke to a few media outlets to dicuss their latest venture, ‘Canada Takes The Mic’. “It took my like 15 years to get back in the country, but when I got big, the country embraced me. My spirit feels like I should be in this country, and I know there’s a lot of undiscovered talent in Canada,” Ghost opened up saying. “So I wanted to do a label here, get behind an artist and make sure it’s done right and rock out, push up. You got Drake, you got Melanie Fiano, you got all that, but if I know you got that, there’s so much more.”
Farley Flex continued stating that the competition isn’t just for rappers, “It’s an all-inclusive genre thing – can be country, it can be rock, it can be whatever. Good music is good music and this country has a complete lanscape of good music. Auditions will happen in 10 cities across the country a la American Idol, and joining Ghostface and Farley in the judging process is a surprise guest that Ghost said, “you gonna respect that person.” Every Canadian city will have their own representative, and then all competitors will be moved to a mansion in Toronto and put to every challenge, but Ghost assured me that there wouldn’t be a cheesecake walk the way Diddy did his Making The Band competitors. And if you think this competition is a cake-walk (or cheesecake walk), Farley Flex went on to say, “You got to compete, it’s the survival of the fittest. We’re putting it out on that level, where people have to survive this competition on a serious level – artistically, psychologically, physically, in terms of stage performance, stage performance, stage presence, all all the key outlets that make superstars.”
Of course, we also sat down with Ghostface Killah to further speak on ‘Canada Takes The Mic’ series, as well as what words of advice he has for our own Boi-1da.net readers.
Interview by Ellhah
What are you looking for in the artists who’ll be a part of this competition?
I’m looking for originality, for creativity and a hard worker. I’m looking for someone who wants it, and they may not understand it but I can help them understand it. If you’re looking at it performance wise, you need all that, you need to know how to perform and this, that and the third. But for the most [part], whoever wants it, creativity, originality and just knows how… you know, if you’re gonna rap, rap, if you’re gonna sing, sing your ass off, just someone who really knows how to do those things.
What do you think will be the biggest challenge these artists face?
There’s gonna be a lot of weight on their shoulders. You know, this is for the grand prize here so they’re gonna have to challenge whoever’s in the house. It’s gonna be serious. The challenge is gonna be within themselves – whether they can do it or not.
Any idea of what kind of challenges they’ll be?
We haven’t thought about it, but whatever it’s gonna be, it’s gonna be hard.
What about a cheesecake walk? (Sidenote: Since this takes place in Toronto, what should really happen is a search for the best patty in the city – there’s only one true answer…)
No, no, no, nobody’s gonna be cheesecake walking! I understand why Puff did it, though.
What would you tell the Boi-1da.net readers with regards to joining this competition?
